I am now an official Phase One digital back user which means no more film unless I actually want to shoot it! Yay! I bought the Phase One H20 back which is actually quite an old model, and before it arrived I had concerns about image quality and the crop factor of lenses from the Mamiya RZ 67 Pro II as well as moving to a square format. Well, all I can say is that all my fears were unfounded. The image quality is by a long way, the best I have ever been in control of and I can easily see why when this model came out, it was billed as the best image quality in the world. That may not be true anymore since the advent of the 60mp Phase One P65+ back and it’s siblings, but it is still leaps and bounds ahead of anything made by Nikon and Canon. The image quality is simply stunning! The square format is a joy to use and the crop factor of the lenses just seems irrelevant. Although I have to move a little further back and the field of view isn’t as wide, I still can get the distortion I want on the wide angle lens and the sharpness of the lenses is really showing through now that I’m shooting digital again. All in all, this was one of the best moves I have ever made. I just need some more lighting before I start location shooting again. Oh well, I’ll have to sort out some studio shoots wont I?
